Surviving Detty December in Lagos

Detty December Lagos Nigeria nightlife and travel guide 2026
Detty December in Lagos is something else entirely. The roads are jam-packed, restaurants are fully booked weeks in advance, the queue outside Zaza reaches the street, and absolutely everyone is in the city. It’s chaotic, electric, and honestly one of the most fun experiences you can have, if you know how to navigate it.
I lived in Nigeria for almost 30 years before moving abroad, and I visit often. That gives me a perspective most travel guides don’t have: I’m part local, part visitor. I know where the locals go, I know what the tourist traps are, and I know how to have the absolute best time in Lagos in December without losing your mind. This is that guide.

Where to Stay in Lagos for Detty December

Where you stay in Lagos makes a massive difference to your experience. Lagos is a big city and the two main areas are the Island and the Mainland and they offer very different experiences.

The Island (Victoria Island, Lekki, Ikoyi etc) is where most of the action is during Detty December, the best restaurants, bars, clubs, and events are all here. If you want to be in the middle of everything, stay on the Island. The Mainland is more affordable and more residential, but you’ll be commuting to most activities.

My recommendation: if you have the budget, stay on the Island. You’ll spend less on transport and be closer to everything happening. Book as early as possible, good hotels and Airbnbs sell out very fast in December.
