I live in the UAE and as a Nigerian with a Nigerian passport, one of the things I love about living here is the easy access to Middle Eastern countries. With my Emirates ID, I can get a visa on arrival to more than 5 countries in the region, so for my winter trip this year, I picked Azerbaijan. I’ve been keeping this tradition for the past three years of going on a ski trip every January or February. It all started because I wanted to see snow. As you know, I grew up in Nigeria, and there’s absolutely no snow there! So moving to the UAE, experiencing snow became a bucket list item for me, which is why I do this yearly ski trip (still figuring out skiing though, lol).

For this year’s ski trip, the destination was Qalaba, Azerbaijan so let’s get into all the details! I booked an all inclusive package through Holiday Factory, covering flights, a 3-night hotel stay in Baku, airport transfers, and a Baku city tour for just 1,500 Dirhams. That price was per person (sharing), so my friend and I went together. Getting the visa was only $40, and the whole immigration process was super smooth.

Azerbaijan Visa on Arrival for UAE Residents

Great news, if you live in the UAE, getting into Azerbaijan is incredibly easy. Here’s what you need to know:

• Your emirates ID needs to be valid for at least 6 months to be eligible for visa on arrival

Our base was the capital city; Baku and Qalaba where the ski resort is, is a 3 hours drive away so I booked a full day tour with a tour company that costs $35, other tour companies were charging $75 so I was glad to find this for half the price, if you want the details, drop a comment and I will send it to you.

How to Get from Dubai to Baku

It’s just a 3 hour flight from Abu Dhabi to Baku, incredibly convenient for a weekend or long weekend getaway. I flew with Air Arabia, which was affordable and comfortable. Once you land, airport transfers are easy to arrange, it was included in package from Holiday Factory.

Where to Stay in Baku

I’m a city girl, if you know me, you know this, whenever I travel, I always stay right in the city center. Yes, it can cost a bit more, but trust me, it’s totally worth it. You’re close to all the best attractions and you can walk everywhere, saving money on transport.

4-Day Baku Itinerary: What to Do & See

Day 1: Old City & Highlights

• Walk through Highland Park, turn left at the top for the best Flame Towers photo
• Take the funicular down into the city
• Stroll through Fountain Square and Residents’ Park
• Visit the Carpet Museum, genuinely one of the more interesting museums in the region, and the building itself is shaped like a rolled carpet 
• Walk through Little Venice, the small canal area nearby. You can do their version of the gondola ride in Venice, it costs 10AZN
• Walk to Nizami Street, its Baku’s main shopping area
• Explore the Old City, find the lion head fountain opposite Qəbələ Restaurant for stunning pictures
• Have dinner at Terrace 145 to wind down the day.

Day 2: Waterfront, Alleys & Architecture

• Morning walk to Milli Park and along the Caspian Boulevard
• Grab pastries at Egoist, they have the most delicious baked goods
• Stop at Wonder Park (great if you have kids)
• Head to Crescent Mall for some shopping
• Get lost in the Old City alleys, it’s safe so just wander
• Visit Heydar Aliyev Center, Zaha Hadid’s architectural masterpiece
• Dinner at Beyrən Restoranı for traditional Azerbaijani food

Day 3: Qabala & Tufandag Ski Resort Day Trip

This was the highlight of my entire trip! We got picked up bright and early and did a 3 hour drive to Gabala to visit the popular Tufandag Ski resort. The tour included stops at the Waterfall, a stunning lake before heading to the ski resort.

One thing I love about winter trips is the fashion and boy did I serveee, rate my looks in the comment, I think I ate! lol. The trip to Qabala took 9 to 10 hours, the scenery is completely different from Baku: green valleys, forested slopes, crisp air, definitely worth the trip. We got back tired and ended the day with dinner at Juno, its a rooftop restaurant in the hotel and I 10/10 recommend.

Why Azerbaijan Should Be Your Next Trip from Dubai

• Just a quick 3-hour flight from Dubai, I found myself in a city that I absolutely loved! I’m not a fan of the cold (which is why I call Dubai home), so the ease of a weekend getaway made it perfect for me.
• Baku has made a lasting impression as one of the most organized cities I’ve visited in a long time, and I have a feeling it just might be my favorite city of 2026! The thoughtfulness of the government in planning and maintaining the urban landscape is evident everywhere you look, shout out to them for creating such an impressive city.
• Traveling here is a dream for budget-conscious explorers! I’m talking about taxis for under $2 and meals that cost less than $10. It’s an affordable destination that truly won me over.
• One of the highlights of my trip was the city’s walkability. Thoughtfully designed with citizens in mind, it makes wandering through the streets a joy and a breeze.
• Safety is another standout thing I loved about Baku. Not only are there designated crossings to navigate the bustling city center, but with an underground crossing system and a visible police presence everywhere, I felt completely at ease exploring this vibrant city.

Best Restaurants in Baku: Where to Eat

1. Terrace 145 is the perfect spot for dinner, definitely try their sirloin steak, it was good
2. I stumbled upon one of the best pastries of my life at this charming little pastry shop that you absolutely need to visit: Egoist Cafe
3. For an unforgettable evening, head over to this beautiful restaurant with an outdoor garden set up for drinks & dinner. They also have a live show at night. Shakh Garden
4. Juno Restaurant is a must-visit with delectable food, exceptional service, and while it’s a bit on the pricey side, every bite is absolutely worth it! It was the best dining experience I had in Baku.
5. If you’re craving some good Turkish food, you gotta hit up Beyran Restoran. The meat dishes are delicious, everyone knows the Middle East knows how to cook a good meat!
